LOW โ€” Animal evidence for neuroprotection; limited human cognitive data ยท 1,000โ€“3,000 mg/day

  • โ€ข2023 Science paper found taurine levels decline with age in humans and animals. Taurine supplementation reversed age-related cognitive decline in mice and improved memory. Human cognitive trials are lacking. PubMed
  • โ€ขTaurine is the most abundant free amino acid in the brain. It acts as an inhibitory neuromodulator (GABA-A receptor agonist), osmoregulator, and antioxidant in neurons.
  • โ€ขLimited human data: small studies show acute improvements in reaction time and attention (often confounded by caffeine in energy drink studies). No long-term cognitive RCTs in humans exist.
