  • โ€ขTalbott 2013 (63 adults, 42 days, 750 mg/day): reduced salivary cortisol by 18% (p<0.05) and improved POMS vigor and fatigue subscales. Manufacturer-funded.
  • โ€ขKalman 2008 (56 adults, 4 weeks, 500 mg/day): NO significant cortisol reduction. Reduced weight gain associated with stress eating. Manufacturer-funded.
  • โ€ขConflicting cortisol results across the two available RCTs โ€” one positive, one null. Both had small samples and industry funding.
  • โ€ขMechanism: honokiol (magnolia) is a GABAergic anxiolytic; berberine (phellodendron) modulates cortisol. GABAergic mechanism is well-characterized but clinical translation is limited.
