About Apple Pectin
Apple pectin is a soluble fiber (high-esterification polysaccharide) that lowers cholesterol by increasing bile acid excretion. A 3-week trial found 6 g/day pectin reduced LDL-C 6–7% vs control. Crossover studies at 15 g/day showed 7–10% LDL reduction. The EU has approved a health claim for pectin ≥6 g/day and cholesterol maintenance. However, only 2 human RCTs specifically test apple pectin — most evidence comes from citrus pectin or mixed sources. Gut microbiome effects are mostly from animal models.
What Apple Pectin supports
- May lower LDL cholesterol 6–10% at 6–15 g/day (limited human trials)
- Soluble fiber supporting digestive regularity
How much Apple Pectin to take
The RDA prevents deficiency. The effective range is what clinical trials used to actually move the outcome.
