About Black chokeberry
Anthocyanin-rich berry. Meta-analyses of controlled trials suggest modest reductions in systolic blood pressure and total cholesterol, more pronounced in older adults; however a 2025 systematic review found the RCT evidence inconsistent and inconclusive. Preparations vary widely, limiting dose precision.
What Black chokeberry supports
- May modestly lower systolic blood pressure in some trials, especially in older adults
- High in anthocyanin antioxidants
How much Black chokeberry to take
The RDA prevents deficiency. The effective range is what clinical trials used to actually move the outcome.
Effective
300–1500
mg
Trials use a wide range of extracts and juice; anthocyanin-standardized extracts around 300-500 mg have been studied for blood pressure. Range is approximate given heterogeneous preparations.
Clinical evidence
Moderate clinical evidence. Meta-analyses show small BP/cholesterol effects; recent review calls RCT evidence inconsistent.
