About Phytoceramides
Ceramides are sphingolipids that form a critical component of the skin's moisture barrier. Oral phytoceramides (plant-derived, typically from wheat or rice) have been studied for improving skin hydration and reducing transepidermal water loss. The Ceratiq brand uses wheat-derived ceramides standardized for glycolipids, phytoceramides, and glycosylceramides.
What Phytoceramides supports
- Supports skin moisture barrier and reduces transepidermal water loss
- May improve skin hydration and smoothness
How much Phytoceramides to take
Clinical studies typically use 30–350 mg of Phytoceramides. 350 mg/day wheat ceramide extract is the most studied dose. Lower doses (30–40 mg) of purified phytoceramide fractions also used.
- Effective range
- 30–350 mg
Clinical evidence
Limited clinical evidence. A few small clinical trials on skin hydration; evidence is limited and mostly industry-funded
