About Green Lipped Mussel
Green lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) is a New Zealand shellfish extract rich in omega-3 fatty acids (including ETA, a unique omega-3 with dual COX/LOX inhibition), chondroitin sulfate, and glycosaminoglycans. Multiple small RCTs (Lau 2004 n=80, Cho 2003 n=57, Stebbings 2017 n=80) show moderate improvement in osteoarthritis pain and function. Brien et al. (2008, Inflammopharmacology) systematic review found consistent anti-inflammatory effects. Lipid extract formulations (Lyprinol/BioLex) are more concentrated and may be more effective per mg. Contraindicated in shellfish allergy.
What Green Lipped Mussel supports
- Reduces OA pain and improves joint function (multiple RCTs)
- Anti-inflammatory via dual COX/LOX inhibition (unique ETA omega-3)
How much Green Lipped Mussel to take
Clinical studies typically use 600â1500 mg of Green Lipped Mussel. Whole extract: 600â1500 mg/day (Lau 2004, Stebbings 2017). Lipid extract (Lyprinol): 150â300 mg/day. Most RCTs used 1000â1500 mg whole extract for knee OA.
- Effective range
- 600â1500 mg
Clinical evidence
Moderate clinical evidence. Multiple small RCTs (n=57â80) and 2 systematic reviews show moderate OA benefit. Consistent but limited by small sample sizes.
