About Green Lipped Mussel

Green lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) is a New Zealand shellfish extract rich in omega-3 fatty acids (including ETA, a unique omega-3 with dual COX/LOX inhibition), chondroitin sulfate, and glycosaminoglycans. Multiple small RCTs (Lau 2004 n=80, Cho 2003 n=57, Stebbings 2017 n=80) show moderate improvement in osteoarthritis pain and function. Brien et al. (2008, Inflammopharmacology) systematic review found consistent anti-inflammatory effects. Lipid extract formulations (Lyprinol/BioLex) are more concentrated and may be more effective per mg. Contraindicated in shellfish allergy.

What Green Lipped Mussel supports

  • Reduces OA pain and improves joint function (multiple RCTs)
  • Anti-inflammatory via dual COX/LOX inhibition (unique ETA omega-3)

How much Green Lipped Mussel to take

The RDA prevents deficiency. The effective range is what clinical trials used to actually move the outcome.

Effective

600–1500

mg

Whole extract: 600–1500 mg/day (Lau 2004, Stebbings 2017). Lipid extract (Lyprinol): 150–300 mg/day. Most RCTs used 1000–1500 mg whole extract for knee OA.

Clinical evidence

Moderate clinical evidence. Multiple small RCTs (n=57–80) and 2 systematic reviews show moderate OA benefit. Consistent but limited by small sample sizes.
