About MCT oil
MCTs are fatty acids with 6–12 carbon chains that bypass normal fat digestion and are rapidly absorbed and metabolized by the liver for quick energy or ketone production. C8 (caprylic acid) and C10 (capric acid) are the most bioactive fractions. Derived from coconut or palm kernel oil. Widely used for sustained energy, cognitive support (via ketone production), and as part of ketogenic diets. May cause GI discomfort (cramping, diarrhea) when introduced too quickly. No established RDA/UL.
What MCT oil supports
- Rapidly converted to energy — bypasses normal fat digestion
- Supports ketone production, an alternative brain fuel source
- May support thermogenesis and fat oxidation
- Quick-absorbing energy source for endurance and performance
How much MCT oil to take
Clinical studies typically use 5000–15000 mg of MCT oil. Common supplemental dose is 5–15 g/day (1–3 tablespoons). C8 (caprylic acid) is the most ketogenic fraction. Start low to avoid GI discomfort. Softgel forms typically provide 1–3 g per serving.
- Effective range
- 5000–15000 mg
Clinical evidence
Moderate clinical evidence. Several trials on energy and ketone production, but most health claims rest on small studies
