Lutein plays a key role in vision. Lutein is a xanthophyll carotenoid that accumulates in the macula and lens of the eye, where it filters harmful blue light and acts as an antioxidant. - •AREDS2 (2013, JAMA, 4,203 participants) found lutein + zeaxanthin was a safe and effective replacement for beta-carotene in the AREDS formulation for reducing advanced AMD progression. PubMed
