Zeaxanthin plays a important role in vision. Zeaxanthin is a xanthophyll carotenoid and an isomer of lutein. It concentrates at the very center of the macula (fovea), while lutein is more peripheral โ€” together they provide complete macular pigment coverage.   • โ€ขAREDS2 used 2 mg zeaxanthin alongside 10 mg lutein. The combination significantly reduced risk of progression to advanced AMD in participants with low dietary intake of these carotenoids. PubMed
